BOOK 2: METHODOLOGY INVITE

Admin

METHODS MAPPING 2 / DESIGN FOR COMPLEXITY

Greetings NextD Journal readers. Emerging from a pause to let the methods related R&D around this subject evolve, we are back on track with Book 2, looking forward to driving it towards completion in a timely way. It’s a complex subject. Let’s be optimistic!

Based in Copenhagen, Jacob Lee Ravnborg has joined the team and we are having lots of constructive methods-related conversations..:-)

To reiterate, what we are looking for in this Book 2 is design oriented innovation methods that meet the Design for Complexity criteria of being operational upstream from product, service and experience design assumptions. In other words we are looking for, inviting, processes that contain no baked-in up-front assumptions regarding challenge path or evolution path.

This practice-based criteria comes from the practical realization that in the complex arenas of organizational changemaking (Arena 3) and societal changemaking (Arena 4) it is most often not possible to assume that the actual changes are known upfront.

Reflecting back, when we created this NextDesign Leadership Rethinking Initiative and the NextD Geographies Framework circa 2005 we did not fully realize how revolutionary that seemingly simple ask was going to be and still is. It is the methods in the emerging practice community that are operating upstream without baked-in assumptions that we are focused on here.

As in Book 1 we are focused on process architecture and not engaged in evaluating the effectiveness of the methods. We are looking at, not philosophy, but rather methodologies. Our target audience is everyone interested in better understanding the Design for Complexity subject, particularly from the methods perspective.

While Book 1 contained 60+ innovation methods spanning an 80+ year period we are anticipating a much smaller sample size for Book 2.

If you think you have a Design for Complexity process and or have questions in this regard feel free to write to Jacob or myself.

Advancing the book, the deadline for submission and consideration is March 1, 2025.

Here is the site for Book 1 for those who might have missed this earlier.
