Launch NextD WorkshopONE Summer Session 2008
Launch NextD WorkshopONE Summer Session 2007
NextD WorkshopONE is a hands-on learning-by-doing session like no other. Around the world everyone is talking about the importance of innovation leadership but what the heck is it in the context of cross-disciplinary organizations and in terms of everyday behavior? How do you make innovation inclusive, tangible, real and applicable to the diversity of challenges facing you and your organization today?
In the 21st century continuous change has already become part of the everyday marketplace. In this context organizational leaders today face a continuously evolving array of never before encountered challenges and opportunities. To operate in that emerging landscape of complexity today design/innovation leaders need highly adaptable process tools and cross-disciplinary team leadership skills applicable to many types of challenges or opportunities.
NextD WorkshopONE is discipline agnostic and focused primarily on HOW (Process) rather than any particular WHAT (Content). This is not a touchy-feely Kumbaya session, folks. Our instructor teams draw from and share lessons learned on the front lines of 21st century innovation acceleration, organizational transformation, and strategy consulting practice.
WorkshopONE works at the level of foundational pattern language for inclusive innovation and adaptable strategic co-creation. That language and the interconnected toolkit can be adapted to any challenge condition. Knowledge of that pattern language can inform all specialized innovation process types, including Strategy Design, Strategic Planning, Business Design, Organizational Systems Design, Architecture, Industrial Design, Communication Design, Environmental Design, Experience Design, Design Research, etc.
We all know it is easy to talk the talk of cross-disciplinary innovation collaboration but how do design leaders walk the walk? If your work places you in a position where you have to participate on or lead cross-disciplinary teams tasked with constructing solutions to complex, fuzzy challenges, this workshop is for you.
Included in the years session will be a presentation on Design 3.0 / Making Sense of Design Now! Come and learn about the future of human-centered design innovation that has already arrived.
Who Should Attend:
Leaders proactively seeking new innovation leadership learning paths
Leaders seeking to construct inclusive innovation in their organization
Designers facing difficult cross-disciplinary work challenges
Graduate design educators being asked to provide more robust, team-based cross-disciplinary innovation skill-building
Leaders facing cross-disciplinary project leadership/navigation challenges
Designers wanting to move beyond product or service innovation
Graduate design students who are presently receiving no cross-disciplinary innovation skill-building in their existing graduate programs
Designers who were trained in design school primary to work with their own tribe but now have to work with many other disciplines

NextD is delighted to endorse this extraordinary conference as it closely mirrors our own mission: “Creating New Models of Possibility For All”.
“The central theme of this working conference is the contribution and role of design, business and information technology in driving positive change for the broadest segments of humanity. We want to advance a scholarship of design that involves both social and technical elements and fosters betterment for all levels of human organizations and communities. In that context, we are particularly interested in exploring the following tensions:
Design that works for everyone, everywhere versus design to assist the least developed segments of the world community.
Developing new theories and business models that fit with emerging economies versus applying our current best practices.
Design for global markets drawing on local traditions versus design for local markets drawing on universal brands.
The working conference seeks to facilitate dialogue of a multidisciplinary group of leading scholars from industry and academia who are interested in exploring aspects of design and organizational action from a positive stance. A positive stance implies taking a perspective that is more concerned with positive change, that involves the encouragement of organizational and societal strengths, and that emphasizes our capacity to construct better artifacts, better technologies and better human systems.”

VHA, a leading health care alliance network in the US with thousands of member hospitals is working with NextD and the Complexity Navigation Program faculty to transform how its internal consulting group leaders help member hospitals tackle wicked problems. The Complexity Navigation Program is taught by leading innovation consultancies and is inclusive of Strategic Co-Creation, Design Research, and Visual Sense-Making.
Based in Dallas, VHA has multiple teams undergoing Complexity Navigation skill-building. With the health care industry facing never before encountered fuzzy challenges VHA seeks to proactively help its hospital members meet the change, adaptability and innovation challenges of the 21st century. The NextD Complexity Navigation Program is designed for this purpose.
Each year NextD agrees to work with a select group of companies who are serious about becoming more innovative. The NextD / Complexity Navigation Program is geared towards those organizational leaders who want to move beyond just reading case studies or talking about innovation and instead start doing something tangible about its actual realization. No abstract studies, just real skill-building. The program is ideal for teams within large organizations that seek to undertake the difficult work to become more adaptive, proactive and innovative. Participants build real skills in Cross-Disciplinary Human-Centered Innovation, inclusive of Strategic Co-Creation, Design Research, and Visual SenseMaking. This hybrid 21st century skill-set is part science, part design and part business. These skills are adaptable, not only to product creation but to all kinds of challenges and opportunities facing large organizations in an increasingly complex, continuously changing world.
The Complexity Navigation Program is taught by leading innovation consultancies combining practical expertise with deep knowledge of experiential pedagogy.
The methods taught are those being used in practice at Humantific, Basadur Applied Creativity, In/situm and DNX Group. The program launched in the US in September 2007 and is now being expanded globally. NextD Interactive Innovation Profile at Institute of Design
We have been delighted to see Chris Bernard taking the lead to drive change over at IIT Institute of Design in integrating Design 3.0 awareness that today in-bound knowledge regarding team behaviors is just as important as out-bound knowledge of user behaviors. Its a fundamental principle of Design 3.0 that we were happy to introduce at the IIT Strategy Conference Round Table in 2006. Chris has created an IIT version of a Jumpstart Workshop in which he has his entire class do their innovation profiles using the NextD / Basadur interactive Innovation Profile. Utilizing the innovation profile, NextD is working with forward thinking graduate school instructors in a dozen countries and we are happy to have Chris Bernard among them.

Conscious Design Study
Kamille Friis, a PhD student at Learning Lab in Denmark, studied Humantific, NextD, IDEO, Bruce Mau Design and e-Types as part of her thesis focused on “Conscious Design Practice as a Strategic Tool.” Kamille spent a week in our Humantific New York office and attended a NextD WorkshopONE summer session.
“The purpose of the industrial PhD Conscious Design Practice as a Strategic Tool is to create new in-depth understanding of how strategic design consultancies carry out design work, in particular the design methods and processes. It is a journey into new territory. The concept of strategic design is a recent development within the field of design, focusing on the strategic thinking important to identify opportunities for innovation and growth.”

The Integration Imperative
From the DMI conference site: “As the roles of design and brand become more and more strategic to business success, so too the need for cross-discipline collaboration increases. In fact, building integration between brand, design, and business is now an imperative to sustainable business success. How can design and brand managers create an environment of cross-discipline knowledge-sharing to achieve optimum results and customer satisfaction? How can different disciplines best collaborate? What structures and processes need to be in place in order to create winning strategies? How is the integration between internal and external competencies best leveraged? Should the design manager foster a cross-discipline environment for innovation? How does brand management integrate and optimize all touch points to create relevant customer experiences? What methods foster synergy throughout the creative and management disciplines?... This June, DMI will take on integration as a business imperative at our 19th International brand and design conference in Chicago. Don’t miss this important learning opportunity.”

NextD at Hyperwerk
It began with an invitation to fly to Basel for the weekend to participate in a curriculum design session for the upcoming year.
After two intensive days of work it was agreed that NextD would bring WorkshopONE to HyperWerk at the University of Applied Sciences in order to provide real cross-disciplinary innovation dynamics skill-building at the beginning of the term. Mischa Schaub, the energetic Director of HyperWerk wanted to take the courageous route and asked us to provide workshops for the entire student body of 100 as well as the faculty. It was am ambitious goal and a great way to create a common platform of understanding around cross-disciplinary innovation dynamics.
Last week the NextD University teaching team lead by Tony Fross and Elizabeth Pastor flew to Basel
to provide three days of intensive, back-to-back WorkshopONE sessions at HyperWerk. The response
from students and the faculty to the NextD experiential learning approach has been extremely positive.
Thanks to HyperWerk for inviting us.

Design's New Frontier
By Silje Kamille Friis
Design Innovation Consultant
Written for Learning Lab Quarterly
Copenhagen, Denmark
"The field of strategic design carries a huge potential for the agencies capable of making the evolutionary
leap from 'merely' being about design to step up and grapple with strategic management...This
is not just a matter of competence development among the agencies, but also a matter of educational
policies at the design schools. It is also very important that clients come to see strategic design
agencies as key partners in their long-term strategic planning. If and when this happens, design
agencies may well become the innovative driving force in the economy of tomorrow."
